Hamilton Reacts to Law Protecting Transgender People

Hamilton’s LGBTQ community have one more thing to be proud of this Pride Week.The amendment to the Ontario Human Rights Code prohibiting discrimination against transgender people passed at the provincial legislature Wednesday morning.

Toby’s Act, named after trans activist and musician Toby Dancer, was introduced as a private members’ bill by Cheri DiNovo, NDP MPP for High Park-Parkdale.

“To me, it’s homage to a dear, dear friend who was lost — as many transgendered folk are lost — to suicide,” she said at Queen’s Park Wednesday

This makes Ontario the second jurisdiction in Canada — the first being the Northwest Territories — to recognize gender identity in human rights legislation.
