Hi, I’m Rebekah Clause and I’m a 4th year social work and religious studies major at McMaster University. I started my placement at the Social Planning and Research Council of Hamilton (SPRC) in September and will be here until December.
I was born and raised in Hamilton and have always wanted to become more involved in my community. I am interested in further exploring community development and developing my research skills so naturally I was excited to obtain a placement at the SPRC! My interest in community development stems from my involvement with the Global Youth Volunteer Network, where I have been privileged to travel to Kosovo and Macedonia in May 2011 and 2012. I volunteered in learning centers for Roma children and youth where they receive homework help, peer-to-peer support, and have a safe place to hang and have fun. Upon my return, I received work though a Canada Summer Jobs placement at the Christ’s Church Cathedral in Hamilton as a summer student archivist.
Currently, at SPRC, I have 2 supervisors with whom I am working on different projects. With Deirdre Pike, I am co-authoring a sex worker engagement project for the South Sherman Hub which is creating community approaches to neighbourhood concerns with regard to street level sex workers. With Patti McNaney, I am working on various projects with the Community Action Program for Children (CAPC). I am looking forward to continuing my placement, and working on these projects, here at the SPRC!
