Hamilton is one of the most dangerous cities in Ontario for pedestrians

Councillors Wednesday recommended a pedestrian mobility plan aimed at improving safety in one of Ontario’s most dangerous cities for pedestrians.

In fact, the risk of injury for pedestrians is 35 to 42 per cent higher here compared to the province-wide figure; for cyclists, it’s 45 to 81 per cent riskier, says a Social Planning and Research Council of Hamilton report.

And since December 2012, five of six pedestrian traffic fatalities in the city were senior citizens, Sara Mayo, a social planner with the council told city politicians Wednesday.

“Our aging population makes safer streets even more urgent.”
