North End residents paying hefty price for city’s rejuvenation plan

A rising tide is washing over Hamilton’s North End.

Property values are increasing, sometimes dramatically, homes are being renovated or even rebuilt, and the city has an ambitious plan to spur residential development on the waterfront.

The challenge facing the North Hamilton Community Health Centre, which primarily serves the North End and Keith neighbourhoods from Bay Street to Sherman Avenue, is trying to ensure that this rising tide floats all boats.

A comprehensive report released Friday by the health centre highlights a number of significant concerns facing residents in north Hamilton, particularly related to housing and low incomes.

The report, compiled by the Social Planning and Research Council, shows that the proportion of houses in need of major repairs in north Hamilton is twice as high as the rest of the city. One in six north Hamilton homes are in need of major repairs.
