Hamilton's first:
Children's Symposium
was held January 31, 2001
Hamilton, Ontario
Hosted by the
Social Planning & Research Council of Hamilton-Wentworth
- Keynote speaker: Dr. Fraser Mustard, renowned medical researcher and childhood development expert, co-chair of "The Early Years" study
- Panel discussion by leaders in business, government, foundations, research and the volunteer sector: Terry Cooke, Carolyn Milne, Dr. Dan Offord, Diane Bascombe and Clara Will
- Workshops/roundtable discussions
The goals of the symposium were to
- inspire service and business sectors, volunteers and individuals to commit to making Hamilton a better place for children and youth
- learn from other communities
- mobilize community interest in children's and youth issues
- build on positive initiatives already in place
- define a long term vision for local children and youth
- identify next steps to make our vision a reality!
This symposium involved:
- Businesses interested in "family-friendly" policies
- Child care sector
- Community development/planning sector
- Education sector
- General public, e.g. parents, grandparents
- Health sector
- Justice/law enforcement sector
- Recreation sector
- Social services sector
- Volunteers in agencies/organizations serving children and youth
