Community Map of Child and Family Well-Being
What is The Hamilton Community Map of Child & Family Well-Being?
The Hamilton Community Map is a Geographic Information System that maps indicators of child and family well-being at a neighbourhood level. It is a powerful community development tool that visually portrays the unique characteristics and conditions of each neighbourhood. It maps community assets and can be used to identify risk and resilience factors at a local level.
The key objectives of the Hamilton Community Map are to:- democratize information so that residents can play a role in addressing social issues
- document the influence of community factors on family and children’s well-being
- enhance the community’s ability to make effective use of local resources and data
- increase local expertise in using asset mapping as a community development tool
- develop a model that will serve as the foundation for future community mapping initiatives
Who will benefit and how?
Informed involvement of residents and access to neighbourhood level information are critical in effective community development. This project is unique in that it will give community-based groups the ability to access and use information that has traditionally been the domain of government, researchers and planning groups. By providing useful and meaningful neighbourhood data, the Hamilton Community map can identify local assets and needs and can support efforts towards promoting community-based solutions.
Examples of the types of profiles that can be produced using community assets and neighbourhood socio-economic characteristics.
