Taking action which will result in an increase in the supply of affordable housing - Affordable Housing Flagship Initiative
The Affordable Housing Flagship is a community collaborative made up of over 20 member organizations from the private sector, public sector, community agencies, architects, planners, volunteers, and non-profit housing providers.
The Flagship has identified the following aspiration:
“To ensure that the Hamilton community provides those who reside therein a place to live that instills pride, yet does not compromise the basic necessities of life, such as food, clothing, safety, access to shelter, and attainment of further life goals.”
The SPRC is dedicating staff resources to this community development initiative.
The Flagship has its roots in 3 community initiatives:
- The Community Advisory Board on Homelessness efforts to create a Housing Trust Fund
- The Hamilton Civic Coalition’s Priority Working Group on Affordable Housing
- The City of Hamilton’s Social Vision for the New City of Hamilton that identified 3 Flagship initiatives: children and families, skills development and affordable housing.
Current Workplan Priorities are:
- Creating affordable housing across the housing continuum.
- Policy advocacy toward making affordable housing a reality in Hamilton
- Community development to ensure readiness for affordable housing.
