The Spectator’s View: Younger workers need living-wage jobs

Hamilton’s youngest workers are among the lowest paid in all Ontario. That’s hardly the legacy we would want to leave for the next generation.

A new report by the Social Planning and Research Council says the median wage for workers in the 20-to-24 age group has fallen by nearly half in the last three decades. Young workers face more precarious employment, fewer hours, lower wages in general and less access to permanent jobs with benefits. In other words, many of our kids can only dream about the sort of employment options we took for granted when we were that age.

The unemployment rate for workers in that age range is 13.2 per cent in Hamilton, nearly double that of the rest of the workforce.
