The Hamilton General Hospital STD Clinic and a downtown sexual health clinic are closing their doors in a consolidation move.

Health Initiatives For Youth on York Boulevard, the clinic founded by Elizabeth Bagshaw, is also closing.

Both will move to a central location downtown.

A public health official says it’s part of an effort to consolidate services at a new location inside the McMaster facility at Main Street West and Bay Street South.

“Yes, we are consolidating our services — we are going to be looking at all our sites,” said Dr. Julie Emili.

Emili said there are no plans to close any other publicly-funded sexual health clinics. But she added the department will be reviewing services over the next couple of months.

“We are looking at the best way to offer our services.”

Unlike the sexually transmitted disease clinic at Hamilton General, the new public health clinic will offer reduced-price birth control. Health Initiatives For Youth has offered that service.

“The important thing to say is the downtown clinic is much better serviced by transit,” said Sara Mayo, of the Social Planning and Research Council.
