Muneeb Muzaffar thinks the Riverdale community gets a bad rap.
Despite the obstacles of poverty, crime, housing access and food insecurity, there are many people working to improve the quality of life.
“There are a lot of motivated people who want to make positive change,” said the 17-year-old.
Muzaffar is one of those people. The Orchard Park Secondary School student was recently named co-recipient of the YMCA Peace Medal in the youth category by the YMCA of Hamilton/Burlington/Brantford.
A natural leader, Muzaffar started a charity basketball tournament in conjunction with the Optimist Club of Stoney Creek in the summer of 2013. Earlier this year, he co-founded the Youth Focus Program with facilitator Brenna Sekerak. He secured $1,500 in seed money from the Social Planning and Research Council of Hamilton and completed the project under budget, returning about $500.
