The retired community developer looks back on a career helping Hamilton help itself.

David Derbyshire still recalls a Christmas moment a few years ago that made the last 40 years of his life worthwhile.

There had been a fire at a bicycle shop. The owner had cleaned up 20 children’s bicycles, wiping away any traces of smoke damage. Then he called Derbyshire. Did he know anyone who might want them?

Derbyshire called around the neighbourhoods he covered as a community development worker — McQuesten, Beasley, Gibson-Lansdale. At Christmas, he delivered the bikes.

One boy met him at the door, breathless with excitement.

“Santa does exist,” the boy told his mom. “And David knows him!”
