Join us for free, community-based, legal training on housing!
Displacement (involuntary loss of housing) due to gentrification is happening in Hamilton. To challenge this, the [Dis]placement Project provides training on housing law to community leaders, emerging community leaders, and service providers who support new Canadians in the Riverdale and Beasley neighbourhoods.
This training is co-facilitated by lawyers from the Hamilton Community Legal Clinic. Topics include:
- Understanding displacement & gentrification
- Residential Tenancies Act, including Low Fault/No Fault evictions, Maintenance & Repairs, and Above Guideline Increases (AGIs)
- How to properly fill out forms and documents
- Municipal By-Laws and Zoning
The need is there to educate the community on housing law and new Canadians need to be made aware of their rights and what they can do to assert them. Once completed the training, community workers will be able to provide information to the new Canadians they support in Beasley and Riverdale in order to increase their capacity to assert their legal and human rights as tenants.
We are inviting all community leaders, emerging community leaders, and service providers who support new Canadians in the Beasley and/or Riverdale neighbourhoods to participate in the training.
Sessions are once a month from March to July and take place in Riverdale, Beasley, and the ARCH.
